AUAF Honors the Legacy of our Founder, Dr. Sharif Fayez
On February 8th 2020, AUAF paid tribute and honored the legacy of Dr. Sharif Fayez, Founder of the American University of Afghanistan, starting with a Khatm e Quran by the AUAF community and followed with the recitation of the Holy Quran (Khatmaana). President David Sedney remembered the life and dedication of Dr. Fayez and recalled his time at AUAF with Dr. Fayez in 2016 stating that “his passion in his later years was this University, we both faced challenges that others gave up on for AUAF, but Dr. Fayez stood up with his spirit and dedication to this University that I admire so much then and I still admire now.”
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the Chief Executive of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, spoke highly about his time with Dr. Fayez, as a “patriotic scholar who dedicated his life for his nation and a compassionate person who had a vocal voice for education in Afghanistan”.
Dr. Mashhor, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Higher Education; Jawed Ludin, Representative of AUAF’s Board of Trustees; and close friends and colleagues, spoke at the event and paid tribute to him.
Samaneh Nasiri, Dr. Fayez’s niece, read a letter on behalf of the Fayez family and Dr. John Wall, English Professor and representative of AUAF’s faculty, praised Dr. Fayez’s vision for education in Afghanistan and reminisced about what it means to lose a valued colleague and fellow lover of literature.
At the end of the memorial, students and other guests had the opportunity to remember Dr. Fayez by reciting some poems and sharing their personal stories of him. Dr. Fayez, AUAF's gentle and brilliant Founder, will always be part of this University community and all those who knew him. At AUAF, we honor his legacy by continuing his work to provide a world-class education to all Afghans.
