AUAF marked 3rd Anniversary of the Tragic Attack on August 24th 2016

Today, 24 August, the American University of Afghanistan marks the 3rd Anniversary as we remember our students, faculty and staff who became victims of the heinous attack on the University on 24 August 2016.

As we recognize the third anniversary of this dreadful attack, AUAF remembers with deep sorrow and honors the memory of those lost, and at the same time look forward with those who also suffered in the attack and are now completing their educations and looking forward to being a part of building a stronger Afghanistan.  Although those lives lost were cut short all too soon, their goals and ambitions are being realized and carried on through the commitment of every member of the AUAF family to be a beacon of higher education in Afghanistan.

At the Commemorative Ceremony today, President David Sedney gave opening remarks, thanking the families for attending the memorial who lost their beloved ones during the tragic attack. He said that “Today we gather to remember that those who suffered from the attack, and the sacrifices made by these families, should never be forgotten.” We have the responsibility to preserve and protect the University in their honor by preparing future leaders for Afghanistan. We all are the ones who represent the future of the University and the nation for the ones who sacrificed themselves.

Student speaker Mohammad Anil Qasemi, proclaimed that “We are here to remember those from this amazing community from different backgrounds that had hopes and achievements to study at AUAF. It is said that “Heroes are always hard to find” but for me these are the people who made me believe that we do have “heroes”. Humanity and education will always prevail over violence and ignorance.”

Representatives for AUAF’s Student Government Association (SGA), Ali Mohammad Yaqobi and Marzia Azizi, outline two programs for AUAF service projects in the name of AUAF-a tree planting program and a mentoring program especially for younger victims of violence. “AUAF students will always remember the sacrifices of those who have gone before us.”
