The International Center for Afghan Women’s Economic Development Launches Commercial Law Analysis Paper

On December 7, 2015, The International Center for Afghan Women’s Economic Development (ICAWED) at American University of Afghanistan (AUAF)  launched its latest Commercial Law Analysis paper written by Mr. Nafay Choudhury, Assistant Professor of Law at AUAF.

The event was attended by Mr. Mia Ahmadi Miakhel, Head of Legal Affairs Department at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Abdul Salam KohiLegal Advisor of Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Hussain Ali Moien, Head of Economic Development Department at the Ministry of Women Affairs, business women, and commercial law experts.

The event commenced with the recitation of Holy Quran followed by the welcoming remarks by Dr. Mark English, President of the University. He encouraged the participation of women in all sectors and said that AUAF will continue its initiatives towards the economic development of women. He also appreciated the contribution of ICAWED team for such initiatives. 

Ms. Madina Mahboobi, Associate Director of ICAWED, highlighted the impact of  research studies on women‘s economic development and said " international community investments and efforts in the last 14 years have created incredible opportunities for women in economic sector."

Following the speeches by Mr. Mia Ahmadi Miakhel,  Mr. Hussain Ali Moien , and Mr. Abdul Salam Kohi, Mr. Nafay Choudhury, presented his research paper and talked about the  challenges and obstacles women faces in Afghanistan.

"One of the biggest challenge that slows down business women from steady growth in business is lack of security and access to finance." Said Prof. Choudhury.

He shed light on the importance of inheritance law and said that  women should gain access to real property, because she can then use it to seek a loan. He also proposed some recommendations on how the economic conditions of women can be improved.

The second half of the event started with a question and answer session. The launch event was closed with the closing remarks by Ms. Mahboobi. She encouraged business women to create the women’s business community for further their growth and success.
